Project 1—Fish Design—Advising 11x17 Poster, 8.5x11 Flyer, Web Banner

These designs were created in InDesign, using fish art from Shutterstock. Below is the original 11"x17" poster, the poster with minor updates, plus the 8.5"x11" flyer and web banner with the updates applied.

The following feedback was given:
  1. Will the fish make it to the other bowl with the current trajectory? Move to the right a bit?
  2. Add more space between the script and the rest of the headline.
  3. Check resolution of the fish image.

Updates:

  1. I chose not to move the fish. I thought it would have enough air time to make it. What do the rest of you think about its trajectory? Will it make it to the other bowl or not?
  2. I added a small bit of leading between the head and the next line on all of them. For the web banner, I tightened the leading of the remaining lines to allow it all to fit. Do you think the changes improved the overall appearance?
  3. Great reminder! I updated the resolution and in the process noticed that my original art was skewed width-wise. I corrected that when I upgraded the resolution.
NOTE: It bothered me that the font has serifs for the capital "I" but not for anything else. It didn't bother my feedback partner, so I left it. What does everyone else think?

  1. Sue - I'm afraid I'm quite overwhelmed with the number of pieces you've uploaded here between this post and the one above it. Would it be possible for you to be more selective?

I'm not sure we need to see the original pieces, especially if you have moved the design forward - instead I'd rather only concentrate on the more recent versions.

    Class projects vs professional pieces
Because this post shows a project from a class, and the one above shows designs that have actually been used (and clearly have moved the original concept and design forward) - I think you should leave these behind, and work on the the pieces that were used by MWCC. They have already solved some of the issues I see in this series, and have become more involved and sophisticated. So - rather than concentrate on these pieces, I'd like to think about those. See my comments there. Thanks.

  2. I'm not worried about the trajectory of the gold fish; whether or not the little guy will make it into the second bowl doesn't affect the design. (Maybe he's "super fish" and will fly off into the distance, unencumbered by any silly old bowl.). I feel the capital litter "I" should be sans serif since none of the lower case letters has a serif. Unity.

  3. I completely agree - this little fish will make his way, and we connect him visually to his bowl enough for this not to be a consideration. The 2 jumping fish in the series used by MWCC (the post above this one) are even farther away from making the leap... but again, it still doesn't really matter. Other things are more important.
