Album Booklet

I changed the font and color on the last page from yellow to white for readability. For the song on the page "come along" I swapped out the lyrics for a different song when I found out Rebecca Sugar didn't actually write it!

  1. Sam - your artwork in here is just great, and the page layouts are quite nice. A few thoughts:

    1. Please revisit the song lyrics and force line turns (using a soft return) to eliminate as many widows as you can. The long fingers of negative space that invade the text block, along with the somewhat hard to read font, make the text pretty uninviting. I like your choice of the handwritten font... but try to make this column of text as cohesive as you can, helping the reader navigate the words.

    2. I am not sure I understand page 7. It looks like you are congratulating another illustrator, and using her cartoon for Steven Universe. So, a bit like the Calvin & Hobbs issue, I'm confused as to whether I am looking at your work, or her work? Is there a way around this? Could YOU be the illustrator they have hired to create this little booklet that accompanies Sugar's tunes because she wants to move more clearly into the composing/musician professions and leave storyboarding behind? Is that your illustration of Sugar? What can you replace Steven Universe art with - of your own work?

Your work, and no other illustrator, should populate your projects and portfolio - to avoid confusion and comparison. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!!

  2. This is a tough one having been in this class with Sam I know the focus of the project was layout. The best way to create an album for this musician is to use the animated characters her music had accompanied. However being such a gifted illustrator and having this amongst your own original work could be confusing to a potential employer. I could see how explaining to said employer that you have someone else illustrations in your portfolio might not be the best thing. Not sure about the most efficient way to deal with this problem in our ever shrinking semester. However creating your own illustrations may be the most worth while option. Best of luck.
