#3 - Gunpowder Treason Plot Website

These are the four pages I have created for an informative website on the history of the Gunpowder Treason Plot.I'm still pretty amateur when it comes to websites, so I would love more feedback on this piece. Thank you.

  1. I think these pages are in the wrong order: the HISTORY page is last, while the PRESENT Day is second. I've never heard about the Gunpowder Treason Plot, so, as a history buff, I was eager to learn more, so I got confused for a moment until I realized the pages must be out of order. I like the use of the typewriter font for the tabs, indicating age. but the size of PRESENT DAY is too small. I'd like it the same size as the other three tabs, so perhaps you could expand the size of the tabs to allow for this. I think the black and gray color palette works well with the color photos and doesn't distract from the historical scheme. This simple website tells the story of this rebellion adequately.

  2. Chris - Yes, it is important to have the typography in the tabs consistently sized and placed. Maybe "Present Day" could become "Today." Then you can revisit the size of the font, and the size/shape of the tabs so they become a better fit for each other.

Color palette seems very appropriate, although I wonder if you would consider colorizing the home page image... to add more vitality to the layout of the page. This is like a cover of a book... the most important page... so some photoshop work on the image could easily help it become a stronger opener for the site.Look at the next page and reuse some of the colors in those photos... the colors are subtle, but add a lot to these b/wh pages.

In Typography, you've learned that when lines of type are too wide, they become difficult to read. On a few pages you have this problem. Divide up the page into 2 or 3 columns to hold that type, and it will become more inviting, and possible, to read the content. I think this is very important.

That should get you started with the major changes. I hope you get some further feedback from others on the more minor issues.

  3. When you change the text to multiple columns, you might consider having the text flush left instead of centered. In general, centered text is easier to read when there is not much text. But when you have a lot more text, it is easier to read as flush left.

Like Virginia, I didn't know the history of this movement. I've seen the Guy Fawkes masks over the last few years and have known it was a form of resistance or rebellion, but I never new the connection to the Gunpowder Treason Plot. Interesting background.

  4. P.S. I like the choice of the home page image. It helps viewers/readers to make the connection with the appearance of the mask—old-style mustaches, etc.
