Extinguisher

well here is the extinguisher with some text and something new to sit on. Tried quite a few different versions and it seems to still be floating a bit. Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

  1. Floating, I think, is an age-old problem for artists. I'd study a few oil paintings to see how the masters worked out this problem. I don't have an answer. I like the texture you've added to the table -- horizontal lines to work with the vertical shine. The addition of text might have created a balance problem. I want to "move" the extinguisher to the left to create move space to the right of the text.

  2. Greg - yes, please pull the extinguisher to the left so the page balance will take into account the type sitting in upper right.

Table... hmmmm - I guess I have a problem with it's non-realistic style. Your extinguisher is really realistic.. but your table is an abstraction - no table actually looks like that. Why not find a table in this position to use as a reference, just as I'm sure you did with the extinguisher. Then, your style will be consistent - and all will be well. Google angled table top.

I just found one that should work: http://www.urbanremainschicago.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/650x/040ec09b1e35df139433887a97daa66f/2/0/20121210-015m.jpg

The floating issue is because we see no table detail within the shadow shape. Look at a shadow, even a deep one - and you'll still find detail of the underlying surface there. So, lighten up the shadow and use "multiply" layer blend in photoshop - we use that setting almost always for shadows.

Do not allow hyphenation in the paragraph of text, and experiment with point size and line length so that you end up with a smooth curved right side without hyphenation.

I can't read the type well, so you are on your own to proof this.

    It's almost there!

  3. Hi Greg, you have done so much work on this image already, but I think you'll be much happier with this illustration after implementing Virginia's and Coni's suggested changes. Once you move the extinguisher to the left a bit, you will have more room on the right to play with the typography. Have you considered using a more antique-looking font for the text? The extinguisher is so gorgeous. It would be great to see the text complement the illustration more. If you are not able to do that, then I might just remove the text, although it is interesting information to read. Also, I would definitely change the transparency to "multiply" for the shadow layer in Illustrator. Best of luck with the table updates.
