Service Project Brochure / Historical Society / Strahan

I had posted my first draft of a brochure for the Narragansett Historical Society for your review, but I just heard back from the president who rejected it, so I just removed it. Ouch! I will survive. This is all part of the experience. Virginia

  1. V - now might be a good time to ask him some very specific questions. Like " who exactly is the target audience", "are the images the problem" "color palette ok". Get him to be very specific. Sorry the road just got bumpy - but it's a chance to refocus and redirect your initial vision for the project. There are numerous ways to approach a project so now get him to share his vision to help you refashion yours. I usually get involved in the rough layout stage before client sees it, sorry this is happening during break and I'm not as available. But all I can say is that this has happened to all of us - so don't take it personally.

    1. Yes. I see this as a very positive experience. FINALLY, I am learning what he actually wants in this brochure. The photos and text he originally sent, he sent only to meet my deadline for photos and text. He really wasn't focusing on the brochure. Since this first draft, he has sent me a wonderful photo for the cover of the brochure, which I think creatively tells the mission of the historical society. I like it a lot. He is a very busy man, with many irons in the fire. Seeing a draft, seeing something in print, is the way to "force" him to decide what he actually wants in this brochure.

    2. Yes, and unfortunately this happens more often then we designers would like. Once the client "sees" the design, they finally start to have more opinions then they even knew they had and/or they finally get on the ball to give us what we need. I'm looking forward to seeing what the revised design looks like.
